Driving in Cyprus

If you are traveling to Cyprus and you plan on renting a car, you need to be familiar with driving in the area.  That way, you will know what to expect when you hit the roads the first time in your car hire.

First understand that traffic in Cyprus moves on the left and not on the right.  The roads in Cyprus follow the British system.  If you are used to this system, you will not need to adjust.  However, if you are used to driving on the right side of the road, start off slowly and give yourself time to adjust.
The signs are something else drivers notice when it Cyprus.  When you are on the road, you will see international road signs.  These signs make it easy for drivers who are not used to the area to receive the direction they need while driving.

Rush hour takes place before 8 AM, again around lunch, and then at 5.  It is best to avoid the roads at those times as there is quite a bit of traffic.
In addition, it is also a good idea to avoid driving to the west in late afternoon.  At that time, the sun can be dangerous to drivers, especially those drivers who are not used to driving in Cyprus.

Anyone in the front seat of the car needs to have their seatbelts on.  Additionally, children under five are not allowed in the front seat of a car.
Keep these rules in mind and you will not have a hard time driving in Cyprus.
